An insight into #lifeatMPC

On 7th June I took part in a 10k race, which considering the London Marathon was just a month before it may not seem like a great distance, but for someone who hung up his running shoes after school track and field days ended in 2010, was still a daunting thought.

If the prospect of running didn’t immediately fill me with unbridled joy, the reason for running motivated me to go out and buy a new pair of trainers and start pounding the streets for the first time in almost a decade.

I was running as a newly signed up LandAid ambassador in their annual 10k event. LandAid is a property industry charity working to end youth homelessness in the UK. As a charitable trust, they award grants to exceptional charities in the UK who are working to tackle youth homelessness. Their grants are invested in capital projects which provide much-needed homes for young people. The 10k event is in its 22nd year and is proving more popular than ever with a total of 639 runners taking to Clapham Common, and has raised more than £90,000 at the time of writing.

My involvement in such a worthwhile cause came through the culture within MPC, which encourages members of staff to find new ways to explore opportunities to make a difference in the community or enhance their knowledge through higher education courses. The flexibility MPC gives its staff to broaden their horizons adds to the enjoyment and fulfilment of the job, and helps to create a good camaraderie within the team, across the four offices.

The run itself was tough, on a muggy day but even in perfect conditions I don’t think my efforts would have Mo Farrah looking over his shoulder (although if he did I’d be so far behind it would be impossible to spot me anyway). Despite this, it was an enjoyable day for a great cause. I’m grateful to MPC for encouraging me to get involved and for being supportive, both in terms of their flexibility in letting me do it during office hours and their generous sponsorship donations.
