Mary joins MPC

My name is Mary Cleaver and I’m just finishing my second week at MPC. My job role here is Marketing, HR and Admin assistant.

I’ve spent 15 years of my life in hospitality and retail, working my way up from washing dishes, getting smoke blown at me across a bar, to managing a team of 15 plus staff, to organising and holding events in-house and externally. So, making the move to the corporate world isn’t as daunting as it seems. This role requires the meticulous organisational skills that running a busy restaurant floor needs, the creativity and snap decision-making skills that apply in all industries and the determination to succeed in whatever I’m doing.

This is starting to sound like a CV which wasn’t my intention…and I’ve already got the job. I wanted to tell you what I’ve learned about MPC in my first few days.

Skip past the introductions and the signing of paper work and bam, fast forward to my second day - we’re off on a train to London to host our annual Women in Planning and Politics event. Now, as an avid reader of our blog you should already be aware of our new campaign #genderchampions. We were celebrating this campaign by inviting clients and friends of MPC to the intimate library of the County Hall Marriott to hear MP and Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, Nicky Morgan speak. In a nutshell, MPC was addressing some of the inequalities in the planning and development industry by encouraging both men and women to give their views and speak out on gender balance.

I know what you’re thinking now - wow what a great company to work for? Imagine me, on my second day, surrounded by people from my new industry and a member of parliament championing women in the workplace. The event was incredible. Nicky Morgan gave a heartfelt and provoking speech and my fellow brilliant colleagues ensured the night went without a hitch.

As I’m now excitedly approaching my thirties, I’ve come to realise what is important to me. I’ve chosen to work at MPC and I will flourish here because we share the same values. At MPC we’ve developed some core values in which we use in everything we do:

This basis of strong empathy, honesty and a belief in being fair to our clients and team hugely resonates with me. Our values ensure not only job satisfaction on my part, but also the knowledge that we are always doing the very best for our clients.

I’m just popping out to lunch now to read my copy of “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg, gifted to me by our CEO.

After that, I’m going to continue the rest of my day learning, improving and ensuring that everything we do is value-driven.
