Objectives:

The success of the consultation process lay in the project team’s ability to build up a group of supporters living on the Estate and support them in carrying out activities which included contacting their local councillors and other stakeholders.

strategy:

Two public consultations were held which included a series of information boards and an interactive display to better demonstrate the new layout of the estate, individual flats and the open space.

Specific tenant focussed meetings and coffee mornings were held regularly. A series of door- knocking sessions were also held at important points in the consultation timeline to speak to tenants less likely to attend events. Tenants were also encouraged to contact the project team if they wanted someone to visit them in their flat to speak to them about the redevelopment in the comfort of their own homes.

It was decided early on in the consultation programme that as this was a lengthy consultation programme, it was important to keep tenants motivated for the development. Along with a project website www.suttonestatechelsea.com, a series of newsletters were sent periodically and residents were which were encouraged to drop-in if they had questions. Posters were displayed around the estate to advertise events, which included ‘road trips’ which gave tenants who were interested in estate regeneration in other parts of London, the opportunity to look around other estates
